Program Description
This 9-hour course covers the range of
oncology emergencies that cancer patients experience. Divided into the
Structural and Metabolic Emergencies; the students will look at the risk
factors, signs and symptoms, interventions, & prognosis for each of
the following conditions: Increased Intracranial Pressure, Spinal Core
Compression, Superior Vena Cava Syndrome, Cardiac Tamponade, DIC, Sepsis
(including MODS), Anaphylaxis, Hypercalcemia (with an overview of other
life threatening electrolyte imbalances & their electrophysiological
consequences), Tumor Lysis Syndrome, & SIADH (with Diabetes Insipidus
comparison). Cardiotoxicity will also be addressed. The program format
includes lecture, discussion, exemplars, case study
presentations,and concludes with attendees breaking out into groups related to their work
background and writing their own case studies. .

nurse and the nurse caring for cancer patients in a variety of settings

Cyndi has over 30 years of experience at the bedside in all areas of hospital nursing
including:
ICU, CSU, CCU, Pedi ICU, Neonatal ICU, BMTU, & Oncology Critical Care.
She has worked all areas of Med/Surg including Oncology & Pediatrics and has a great
deal of experience in Home Health as both a field nurse and a supervisor.
She has also spent a great deal of that time teaching nurses on a variety of topics in a
variety of settings. She has taught traditional critical care classes, oncology & bone marrow
transplant critical care classes, basic EKG, oncology & chemotherapy classes, & many
other topics (including pain management, end of life issues, and ethical issues)
Cyndi is also a very active member of the Oncology Nursing Society both on the local &
national level and is a member of AACN
